Crystalline Hills Trail: Wrangell-St. Elias National Park
The Crystalline Hills Trail is located in Wrangell St. Elias National Park, the largest national park in the United States. The trailhead is along the north side of McCarthy Road at Milepoint 34.8. It can be easy to miss, so as you get close, make sure to keep an eye out for the wooden sign.
This hike is remote in every sense of the word. Be prepared not to see another person on this trail. Bug spray is highly recommended. The mosquitos are vicious, especially in the dead of summer.
When you are on the trail, it climbs gradually. After a half mile, a short spur trail leads to a great view. The gradual climb continues through a thick forest until you reach the base of the quite steep Crystalline Hills. You will need to scramble up the side to get incredible views of the Chitina River valley, Moose Lake, and the Chugach Mountains.
