Seal Rock State Recreation Site

Exploring the Untamed Beauty of Seal Rock State Recreation Site

We pulled into the parking lot of Seal Rock State Recreation Site on a beautiful early spring afternoon.  To my surprise, the small lot was nearly full. Located just south of Newport along the gorgeous Oregon coast, Seal Rock State Park offers breathtaking views with just a short walk.

Seal Rock State Recreation Site: A Coastal Wonderland

The park’s namesake, Seal Rock, is a collection of striking offshore rock formations that rise dramatically from the ocean. These formations create a stunning backdrop for visitors and serve as a haven for marine life, including harbor seals, sea lions, and various seabirds. While you may not always spot seals lounging on the rocks, their playful heads often pop up in the waves as they explore the waters.

Unfortunately, we did not see any seals or sea lions during our visit, but we saw tons of seabirds. Birdwatchers will find plenty to admire here.  Bald eagles are often seen, and flocks of cormorants and pelicans can be spotted diving into the surf.

A short but scenic trail through the park offers spectacular panoramic views of the coastline. Quite a few people were walking and taking in the views.  There were also a few people painting the landscape, which looked so fun!

Best Time to Visit

Seal Rock State Recreation Site is beautiful year-round, but for the best experience, visit during low tide to explore the tide pools or at sunset when the sky erupts in shades of orange and pink. Spring and summer offer the warmest weather, while winter brings dramatic storm-watching opportunities as powerful waves collide with the rock formations.

Plan Your Trip to Seal Rock State Recreation Site

Seal Rock State Recreation Site is located on Highway 101, about 10 miles south of Newport, Oregon. It’s about an hour’s drive from Portland.

Facilities: Parking area, picnic tables, restrooms

Tips: Bring sturdy shoes for tide pooling, a camera for the stunning scenery, and binoculars for wildlife watching

We spent about 20 minutes visiting the park. We could have easily spent more, but we were on a road trip south and had to make some time.

Whether you’re looking for a quiet stroll along the shore, an exciting tide-pooling adventure, or a breathtaking photography spot, Seal Rock State Park delivers. It’s a place where the wild beauty of Oregon’s coast shines, making it an incredible destination for anyone exploring the Pacific Northwest.
