General Zachary Taylor’s Chimney: A Presidential Smokestack
There are many things to do in Fort Smith Arkansas. One of the more off the beaten path stops is Zachary Taylor’s Chimney. We’d been through Fort Smith a few times and it was not until our last visit driving across the country that I even knew this piece of Presidential history existed.
While it may not be the grandest monument, this simple brick structure holds a unique connection to the past, offering a glimpse into the early military career of the 12th President of the United States.
A Relic of the Past
Before he became known as “Old Rough and Ready,” Zachary Taylor was a young officer stationed at Fort Smith in the 1820s. The chimney is all that remains of a house where he likely lived during his time here. Today, it stands as a quiet yet intriguing landmark, tucked away in the parking lot of Immaculate Conception Church.
Pulling in, it took us a second to find it. The sun was going down fast! Thankfully, visiting the site is a quick and rewarding stop, especially for history buffs.
Nearby, you can explore the Fort Smith National Historic Site, where tales of frontier justice, outlaws, and soldiers come to life. Whether you’re a presidential history enthusiast or just love uncovering hidden gems, Zachary Taylor’s Chimney is a small but meaningful piece of Arkansas history worth checking out.
