Gillette Castle State Park: A Visitor’s Guide
Gillette Castle State Park is one of Connecticut’s most fascinating parks. Situated above the banks of the Connecticut River, the mansion looks like something out of a fairytale. We visited midweek on an early fall morning. Pulling into the park just after the gates opened, the fairly large parking lot was empty except for a few park employees, making their rounds.
Visiting the Gillette Castle
After parking and getting out of the car, we bypassed the closed Visitor Center and took the short walk to the crown jewel of the park, the Gillette Castle.
It was hard not to be taken back by the mansion at first sight. It is a striking medieval-inspired mansion that is 14,000 square feet and boasts 14 rooms. The exterior of the home is covered with Connecticut fieldstone, giving it almost a cobbled-together appearance.
It was built between 1914 and 1919 by the famous stage actor William Gillette, who is best known for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. We did not tour the inside on our visit, just enjoyed the outside. We were able to speak with a park worker who enthusiastically recommended stopping back by when tours were being offered.
He explained inside the home, you are treated to Gillette’s whimsical world of design. The castle is filled with intricate woodwork, secret passageways, and quirky custom-designed features—like built-in couches, 47 unique doors and locks, and mirrors in the great hall that allowed Gillette to spy on his guests.

Hiking Trails and River Views
Beyond the castle, the park features several hiking trails that weave through the forested hills and the cliffs overlooking the Connecticut River. The valley below provides a stunning backdrop, especially in the fall when the foliage bursts into brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold.
One of the best views is from the castle’s terrace, where you can gaze out over the river and spot the historic Chester-Hadlyme Ferry journeying across the water—a sight that has remained the same for over a century.
A Great Day Trip Destination
Gillette Castle State Park is an ideal day trip destination. It’s only a 45-minute drive from Hartford and easy to reach from Boston, Providence, and New York City. It’s certainly worth it! We were disappointed we did not tour the inside but plan to visit again.
With the incredible, rich history, stunning views, and one-of-a-kind architecture, it’s easy to see why more than 300,000 people visit this wonderful Connecticut State Park each year.
