Hiking around Trahlyta Lake and Waterfall in Vogel State Park

Trahlyta Lake and Falls is located in Vogel State Park in north Georgia’s beautiful mountains. A wonderful 1-mile loop trail taking visitors around Trahlyta Lake and to the falls.

We arrived at Vogel State Park on an early fall afternoon. It was cool outside with big gusts of wind. The weather was a bit fickle; dark, ominous clouds kept blowing in and out across the park. One second it would feel like it was going to storm. The next one would be beautiful. The parking lot was nearly empty when we pulled in. I was surprised, given the leaves were starting to change color.

We quickly popped into the Visitor Center and then started down the trail along the east side of Trahlyta Lake. This portion of the trail was unpaved but flat and well-maintained. We moved quickly along the banks of the lake, enjoying the sounds of abundant songbirds singing amongst the changing leaves of the hardwood forest. Once we got to the dam on the far side, we were greeted with a fantastic view of Trahlyta Lake with Blood and Slaughter Mountain in the background.

Trahlyta Falls Trail

We took a short spur trail down to Trahlyta Falls from the dam. The natural waterfall is absolutely stunning. It cascades about 50 feet before emptying into a small stream. We relaxed and enjoyed the falls from a viewing platform. “There are few things more relaxing than the sound of the waterfall a few feet from you,” I told my wife. “I totally agree,” she said, “and check out the beautiful colors on the leaves. I love the yellows and reds starting to come in.”

The fall foliage near the falls was incredible. We were about two weeks early from peak color, but it sure was nice.

After about 20 minutes of chatting and enjoying the view, another group of hikers arrived. We said hello and then started the climb back to the main loop. The last part of the trail was paved, and walking was very easy. There were some nice lake views along the way. On our way out, the weather quit cooperating, and it started dumping rain on us, so we hustled back to the car.

Ten out of ten would do this hike again!

Legend of Trahlyta

Both the lake and the falls are associated with a Cherokee legend. According to lore, they are named after a woman who lived in the mountains of north Georgia and drank from the fountain of youth. She is supposedly buried south of the park at the intersection of Highway 60 and US 19.

Where are Trahlyta Lake and Falls located?

Trahlyta Lake and Falls are located in Vogel State Park, in northern Georgia, in Union County. The park sits at the base of Blood Mountain, the 6th highest mountain in Georgia. The park is the second oldest in Georgia and is a great place to spend a few days. It’s about 89 miles, an hour, and 45 minutes north of Atlanta.
