Log Rock Trail in Kingdom Come State Park
Log Rock Trail is an easy 0.5 mile trail in Kentucky’s beautiful Kingdom Come State Park. Log Rock is a stunning rock formation accessed from three points in the park. The trail is well-worn and easy for just about everyone.
We hiked the trail in the dead of summer. Kingdom Come State Park is 2,700 feet in elevation and is Kentucky’s highest state park, but in the middle of July, when my wife and I visited, it was hot and muggy. The night before, we’d camped in the park’s tiny campground. Signs warned about black bears everywhere. We did not see any, but park rangers made it abundantly clear there are many of them in the park.

Hiking Log Rock Trail in Kingdom Come State Park
The following morning, we broke down camp early to knock out some trails before it got hot. Log Rock only took us about a half hour to complete. But it was a treat. The trail’s namesake is a large natural sandstone bridge that resembles a fallen tree.
We saw dozens of songbirds along the trail and startled a few rather large white-tailed deer. Like most trails in the park, this trail can be combined with others to form a longer loop hike.
Other things to do in Kingdom Come State Park
This is also a great park to visit, even if hiking is not your thing. There are eight beautiful views from overlooks. The Little Shepard Trail also runs through the park. It’s a narrow 38-mile mountain road with incredible views along the way. This road is wonderful to drive, but something with four-wheel drive is recommended, or you can mountain bike it. The park is named after the popular Civil War novel, “The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come,” by Kentucky author John Fox Jr. If you plan on camping, make sure to call in advance and reserve a site.
