Visiting Gen. John J. Pershing Boyhood Home State Historic Site

Gen. John J. Pershing Boyhood Home State Historic Site is in the small town of Laclede, Missouri. The site gives visitors a look into the early life of one of America’s most renowned military leaders.

Known for commanding the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I, General John Joseph “Black Jack” Pershing’s legacy is deeply rooted in this historic town, where visitors can explore his childhood home and gain insight into the man behind the military legend.

We pulled up on an early weekend afternoon. Parking on the dirt road right in front of the home, we walked towards the small park office. A friendly park employee greeted us, almost as if she was surprised we were visiting. I got the impression that the park does not get very many visitors.  After a short chat, we headed back towards the home, which was open for self-guided tours.

Pershing Family Home

The entire site is centered around the two-story white frame house where Pershing lived from age six until he was 21 when he left home for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Built in the 1850s, the home is well-preserved and furnished with period-appropriate pieces that transport visitors back to the late 19th century. The rooms were roped off, but you could still walk through the home and see into them. Some of the furnishings are likely original, such as the “crazy quilt” sewn by Pershing’s mother. It was still in the room where Pershing slept with his two younger brothers.

Self-guided Tour

The self-guided tour is quite well done. You get to see most of the rooms in the home. Reading the interpretive signs, it was easy to imagine young Pershing’s daily life and the influences that shaped his disciplined character.

Stepping back outside, we decided to explore the rest of the site. It was easy to assume that the surrounding neighborhood looked much like it did when Pershing lived here. In his later years, Pershing often referred to the Laclede house as his “dear old home.”

Beyond the house sits the Prairie Mound School, which Pershing attended.  Walking into the one-room school, I was pleasantly surprised by the extent of the displays. The exhibits were well put together and highlighted Pershing’s early years, his time at West Point, and his military career, particularly his leadership in World War I. Artifacts, photographs, and personal letters provided a deeper understanding of his impact on American and global history.

The Pershing Memorial and Museum

Adjacent to the boyhood home is the Pershing Memorial Museum and Leadership Archives, which further celebrates his achievements. The museum showcases a collection of military memorabilia, including Pershing’s personal belongings, wartime documents, and a timeline of his military campaigns.

One of the site’s most striking features is the life-size statue of General Pershing, standing proudly in honor of his contributions to the U.S. military.

Exploring the Surrounding Area

Laclede is a charming town that offers more than just the historic site. Nearby, you can visit Pershing State Park, a scenic retreat featuring hiking trails, wetlands, and picnic areas. It’s a perfect place to unwind after soaking in history.

The town’s small but welcoming atmosphere also makes it an excellent stop for those looking to experience authentic Missouri hospitality. Local diners and tiny shops provide a taste of rural Midwest charm.
